Product Overview

Flexible impeller kit, 51 mm (2.00 in) across and 6 blades, for the Johnson F4 pump family and the Jabsco 653-0001 pump, supplied as one impeller, one gasket and one O-ring. It replaces Johnson 09-810B, Jabsco 653-0001, Sierra 18-45713, Mallory 9-45713, Westerbeke 34440, Yanmar 128990-42200 and Volvo Penta 876097, and it fits every pump built on the Johnson F4 and Jabsco 29460 / 29470 bodies. Held in our United States local warehouse.

The number that settles fitment is 51 mm (2.00 in) across, 22 mm (0.87 in) wide, 6 blades on a 12 mm (0.47 in) slotted pin drive with a brass insert. The F3 pump takes a 40 mm impeller and this kit will not fit it.

This pump was sold under a dozen badges. Johnson, Jabsco, ITT, SPX, BLA, CEF, JMP, Northern Lights, Westerbeke, Beta Marine, Volvo Penta and Yanmar all used the same body, so the impeller is the same part whatever name is cast into the housing. That is why the cross reference runs so long, and why measuring the old impeller is a faster answer than hunting for a badge.

On a raw water cooled diesel the impeller is the whole cooling system. Blades that have set into their folded position still allow the pump to turn and still look intact, but the flow is a fraction of what it should be, and the first real warning is usually a hot exhaust elbow or a scorched exhaust hose rather than a gauge reading.

Fitting Notes

Step Action
1 Measure the old impeller, 51 mm diameter by 22 mm wide, the F3 pump takes a 40 mm impeller and it will not fit
2 Check whether the shaft is 12 mm or 3/8 in on the F4B, the pump was sold in both versions
3 Check the insert is brass and not bare rubber, a worn insert will spin on the shaft
4 Inspect the pump cover plate for scoring, a grooved plate lets water bypass the new impeller
5 Clean the pump body and check the cam for wear before fitting
6 Lubricate the impeller with glycerine before fitting, never install it dry
7 Turn the shaft by hand after fitting to confirm the blades fold in the correct direction
8 Look for water under the pump after the first run, a weeping cover gasket is common after a rebuild
