For most boats in Germany this work happens once a year, at the start of the season, when the drive comes off for the bellows check. The gaskets and O-rings are compressed on first fit and cannot be reused, so a kit belongs in the parts box before that day rather than after it.
Fresh water is gentler on the casting than salt, but it still leaves scale and the O-ring grooves still fill with silt. Both stop a new ring seating properly, which is why cleaning the grooves takes longer than fitting the parts.

The Season Start Service
| Task | When | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fit the bell housing gasket kit | Every time the drive is removed | Single use, do not reuse |
| Inspect the bellows | Annually, before launch | Perished rubber lets water into the housing |
| Grease the driveshaft splines | Every season | Dry splines wear the coupler |
| Check the gimbal bearing | Annually with the drive off | Clean water still rusts an idle bearing |
| Check the anodes | Annually, replace at half worn | Lake anodes behave differently to salt ones |
| Flush the water passage | Before lay up | Silt settles over winter |
| Torque the drive nuts | After every refit | Uneven torque distorts the housing face |
| Note the drive oil level | Before launch and after first run | Milky oil means water is getting in |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Read the drive serial plate, this kit starts at 6225577 and the earlier drives use a different set |
| 2 | Scrape both faces clean, gasket residue left in place holds the new gasket off the surface |
| 3 | Clear the four O-ring grooves with a pick and a cloth, silt packed in a groove will not seal |
| 4 | Seat the O-rings dry, no grease and no sealant on rubber |
| 5 | Offer the drive up squarely and let the splines find their own line, do not draw it on with the nuts |
| 6 | Torque the nuts in a cross pattern to the book figure, then recheck after the first run |
| 7 | Run on muffs before launch and check the housing joint and the water pickup for weeping |
| 8 | Keep the old gasket in the box as a reference for next season, it shows which face was leaking |
