Product Overview
Bell housing gasket kit for MerCruiser R, MR, Alpha One and Alpha One Gen II sterndrives, serial 6225577 and above, 1983 onward, containing 1 outdrive mounting gasket, 1 bell housing gasket and 4 O-rings in an 18 x 28 x 3 cm (7.1 x 11.0 x 1.2 in) box. It supersedes 27-94996Q2, 94996Q2, 94996A2, 94996A20, 94996A1, 949962, 94996 and 64818A3, and matches Sierra 18-2743, GLM 31141 and Mallory 9-61012. Dispatched from our United Kingdom local warehouse.
A kit this cheap protects parts that are expensive and awkward to reach. The bell housing sits between the engine and the drive, so a leaking gasket there fills the bellows cavity with water and takes the gimbal bearing, the driveshaft yoke and eventually the coupler with it.
Boats kept on swinging moorings and harbour berths see the worst of it, because the drive sits in salt water between outings and the housing face pits where the gasket once sealed. Cleaning that face back to sound metal is the part of the job that decides whether the new gasket lasts.

Salt Water and the Housing Face
| What You Find | What It Causes | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| White salt crust on the housing face | New gasket cannot sit flat | Scrape and wipe to bare metal |
| Pitting across the sealing ring | Water tracks past the gasket | Dress the face, or the casting needs replacing |
| O-ring groove packed with silt | Ring sits proud and rolls out | Clear every groove with a pick |
| Corroded water passage spigot | Restricted flow and overheating | Clean the spigot while the drive is off |
| Rust staining around the bolts | Water has been sitting in the cavity | Inspect the gimbal bearing before refitting |
| Gasket stuck fast to one face | Heat and salt have bonded it | Scrape with a plastic blade, never a grinder |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check the serial plate on the drive, 6225577 is the cut off for this kit |
| 2 | Support the drive before the last nut comes off, it is heavier than it looks on a trailer |
| 3 | Scrape both faces with a plastic blade and finish with a cloth, no abrasive disc near the sealing ring |
| 4 | Test the face with a fingertip, any step you can feel will leak |
| 5 | Fit the four O-rings dry, then check each one sits fully down in its groove |
| 6 | Guide the drive on by hand, the splines should enter without the nuts pulling it in |
| 7 | Torque in a cross pattern, then recheck after the first run ashore |
| 8 | Run on muffs and look at the housing joint and the pickup before the boat goes back on the mooring |
