Product Overview

Water pump impeller kit for Mercury Mariner outboards from 75 HP through 225 HP and for Mercruiser Alpha and MC1 sterndrives, supplied as 1 housing, 1 impeller, 1 wear plate, 1 water tube guide, gaskets, O-rings, drain screw washers and a mounting key, net weight 380 g. It replaces Mercury 46-96148A8, 46-96148Q8, 46-96148A5 and 46-96148T8 and crosses to Sierra 18-3517, 18-3319, 18-3314 and 18-3316, GLM 12280 and Mallory 9-48311. Shipped from our Australia local warehouse.

One kit covers both sides of the range because the pump body is shared. The same housing, impeller and wear plate sit on the V6 outboards from 75 HP up and on the Alpha and MC1 sterndrives, so the number on your old housing is usually 46-96148 in one of its suffixes.

The kit runs all the way down to the O-rings and the drain screw washers, which matters on a sterndrive where the pump sits behind the gear housing and a reused seal lets water into the gear oil.

Salt, Sand and the Tidal Run

Australian Use Effect on the Pump What to Do
Bar crossings and shallow channels Sand drawn through scores the housing liner Inspect the liner with every impeller change
Warm northern water Neoprene softens and takes a set faster Shorten the service interval
Long runs at planing speed Impeller works hard, tips wear first Renew at 100 hours on working boats
Tidal ramps and sand launch Grit in the water tube and grommet Flush on muffs after the trip
Salt left in the housing between trips Blades stick to the liner and tear on start Never start dry, always on muffs
Boat kept on a mooring Growth and silt at the pickup Clear the intake before the season

Gear Oil After the Job

What You Find What It Means What to Do
Milky oil after the first run Water past a seal, usually the ones in this kit Strip and check the O-rings and drain washer
Oil level rising Water entering the housing Do not run it, find the leak
Metal on the drain plug magnet Bearing or gear wear, not a pump fault Check the gearcase before refilling
Clean oil after the change Seals seated and the job is right Recheck at 10 hours, then normal service
Water at the drain screw only Drain washer reused or missing Both washers are in the kit, use new ones
Leak at the water tube Grommet rolled on assembly New grommet and rubber grease on assembly

Fitting Notes

Step Action
1 Check the number on the pump housing, 46-96148 is the family this kit replaces
2 Check the drive ratio on the sterndrive, all the Alpha and MC1 ratios listed use this pump
3 Check the serial range on the outboard against the list above for the 75-225 HP V6
4 Check the gear housing for scoring and the water tube for a swollen grommet seat
5 Fit the impeller with the blades folded in the direction of rotation and a smear of glycerine only
6 Use the new drain screw washers and O-rings from the kit, not the old ones
7 Pressure test the gear housing before refilling it with oil
8 Check the gear oil after the first run, milky oil means a seal was missed
