Product Overview

Upper exhaust pipe bellows part for MerCruiser V6 and V8 sterndrives, 4 inch (101.6 mm) diameter, replacing 32-44348001, 32-44348 and 32-44348T and crossing to Sierra 18-2748, Mallory 9-72805 and GLM 89120. It arrives as 1 x bellows with 2 x stainless clamps, 481.5 g net, and covers the 1987 to 1998 Alpha One and Bravo models listed below. Shipped from our Australia local warehouse.

This is the top joint on the exhaust side. It joins the exhaust pipe to the transom plate at the top of the gimbal housing, and its only job is to carry exhaust gas out through the leg without letting it into the engine bay. When it splits the exhaust note changes first, then the smell arrives, and on a boat with the engine under a sealed hatch that smell is carbon monoxide.

These are MerCruiser sterndrives, the sterndrive line built by Mercury Marine, and buying by engine family is not enough on these boats. MerCruiser changed the exhaust pipe inside the same model name, so the serial number range in the table below is the only reliable check on anything built before 1998.

The model number is the horsepower on most of these engines, so the 260 GM is the 260 HP V8, the 350 MAG is the 350 HP engine, and the 200 and 230 are the small block versions of the same exhaust layout.

What's Included

Component Detail Qty
Upper exhaust pipe bellows 4 inch (101.6 mm), 32-44348001 1
Stainless steel clamp Worm drive, for the transom plate and the pipe 2

Upper Bellows or Lower Bellows

What You Are Looking At Which Part How To Tell It Apart
Joint at the top of the gimbal housing Upper exhaust bellows, this part Round, 4 inch (101.6 mm), exhaust only, no shaft through it
Joint at the bottom of the gimbal housing U-joint bellows, not this part Larger, the drive shaft runs through it, sits behind the gimbal bearing
Thin corrugated tube alongside the drive Shift cable bellows Long and narrow, follows the shift cable
Small hose on the same transom plate Water passage hose Much smaller diameter, carries raw water up to the engine
Exhaust pipe itself, above the bellows Steel pipe, not this part Rigid metal, only the rubber joint is in this kit

Exhaust Smell and Carbon Monoxide

What You Notice What It Usually Means What To Do
Exhaust smell in the engine bay at idle Clamp off its seat or the bellows has split Stop and inspect before the next trip
Headache or drowsiness after a slow run Exhaust gas reaching the cockpit, carbon monoxide Open up the bay, find the leak and fix it before going out again
Exhaust note louder than last season Split bellows or a missing clamp Renew the bellows and both clamps together
Black soot around the top clamp Gas escaping past the joint Reseat on a clean flange with a new clamp
Steam in the engine bay Exhaust leak plus hot cooling water Inspect the bellows and the water hose at the same time
Nothing visible but the smell is there Hairline split under the ribs Take the bellows off and flex it in your hands

Salt Water, Heat and Rubber Age

Australian Use Effect on the Bellows What To Do
Salt water drying on the rubber Surface hardens and the ribs crack first Fresh water rinse after every trip
35 °C days under a closed hatch Rubber ages faster above 30 °C Inspect the ribs each season, not each decade
Long lay up in the open UV and heat crack the outer skin Cover the boat or expect a shorter life
Ramp launches and retrievals Constant flexing at the same two ribs Check the ribs for splits before the season
Salt left on the clamps Crevice corrosion under the stainless Renew the clamps with the bellows
Engine bay washed with a hose Water sits against the lower rib Dry the bay after washing

Fitting Notes

Step Action
1 Measure the old bellows across the body, 4 inch (101.6 mm) is this part, the U-joint bellows is larger
2 Check the engine serial number against the table above, the 1987 engines used a shorter pipe
3 Clean the transom plate flange back to bare metal, a pitted flange tears a new bellows
4 Fit the bellows before the gimbal bearing and alignment work, that order saves doing the job twice
5 Seat the ribs in the groove on both ends before tightening anything
6 Tighten the clamps with the screw on the side, a clamp on the flat of the rib will not seal
7 Check the water hose and shift cable bellows while the drive is off
8 Run the engine on muffs and check the bay for exhaust smell before the first trip
