Product Overview

Ignition coil for Yamaha two-stroke outboards in the 50HP-90HP band, supplied as 1 coil. It replaces Yamaha 697-85570-00-00 and 6H2-85570-00-00. The coil feeds one cylinder on these three-cylinder loop charged engines, so a coil that breaks down under heat shows up as a single cylinder dropping out above half throttle, a rough idle that clears as the revs come up, or a motor that will not pull past 4000 rpm under load.

The same coil was fitted across the B, C, E and P series from 1992 through 2006, which is why one number covers so many models. Because these engines fire two cylinders from one charge coil, a failing ignition coil is often misdiagnosed as a fuel problem, so swap the coil with a known good one and watch whether the dead cylinder follows it before buying parts.

Before You Buy

  • Read the model and year on the transom bracket, the suffix letters on the model code identify the exact coil
  • Test the old coil hot, most of these fail only once the engine is at temperature
  • Check the spark plug cap and lead resistance as well, a corroded cap mimics a failed coil
  • Use dielectric grease on the terminal and seat the cap fully, a loose cap arcs and burns the coil
  • Replace the plug on the affected cylinder at the same time and gap it to spec
