Ignition Coil 697-85570-00-00 Yamaha 2 Stroke 50-90 HP 1992-2006 Outboard — Germany Local Warehouse
Product Overview
Replacement ignition coil for Yamaha two-stroke outboards in the 50HP-90HP range, one coil per cylinder, covering the 1992 to 2006 model years. It is the direct replacement for Yamaha 697-85570-00-00 and 6H2-85570-00-00. Delivered from our Germany local warehouse.
The coil is bolted to the block and lives with everything the block does, including the wide temperature swings of a European boating season. That is the pattern worth knowing when the motor behaves perfectly in April and then starts dropping a cylinder in July: on these three-cylinder loop charged engines the coil often tests fine cold and breaks down once it is hot.
Because one coil fires one cylinder, the failure reads as a single cylinder going quiet at load. Idle stays acceptable, the boat still planes at part throttle, and the owner books it down to carburettors or stale petrol. Testing it hot, and swapping it with a known good coil on the same block, settles the question in ten minutes.

Cold Start, Hot Failure
| When It Happens | What the Motor Does | What It Points To |
|---|---|---|
| April, first start after winter | Starts and idles, seems healthy | Coil is fine when cold, nothing proved yet |
| First warm day at full throttle | Loses a cylinder above half throttle | Coil breaking down once hot |
| Twenty minutes of running | Dies, restarts after cooling | Classic hot failure, test at temperature |
| July heat, long run to the marina | Will not pull past 4000 rpm | One coil down, load reveals it |
| Autumn, damp mornings | Misfire until the block dries out | Check the lead and cap before the coil |
| After a winter ashore | Corrosion on the coil terminal | Fit a new coil, grease the terminal |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Note the model code and year on the transom bracket before ordering |
| 2 | Disconnect the battery, the ignition circuit stays live otherwise |
| 3 | Mark which lead belongs to which cylinder, they are easy to cross |
| 4 | Unbolt the coil and clean the block face so it grounds properly |
| 5 | Seat the new coil flat and tighten the bolts evenly, the body is plastic |
| 6 | Apply dielectric grease to the terminal and push the cap on until it clicks |
| 7 | Renew the plug on that cylinder and gap it to spec |
| 8 | Warm the motor on muffs, then load it on the water before calling it fixed |

Before You Buy
- Read the model and year on the transom bracket, the suffix letters identify the exact coil
- Test the old coil hot, most of these fail only once the engine is at temperature
- Check the spark plug cap and lead resistance as well, a corroded cap mimics a failed coil
- Use dielectric grease on the terminal and seat the cap fully, a loose cap arcs and burns the coil
- Replace the plug on the affected cylinder at the same time and gap it to spec
- This is one ignition coil, the plug, cap and lead are not included
- 30-Day Easy Returns
- Ships from our Germany local warehouse
