Complete gearcase seal kit for the Volvo Penta 200 to 290, 290DP and SP sterndrives, supplied as 1 x complete gearcase seal kit. This is the kit that reseals the upper gearcase, and it replaces Volvo Penta 875741, which is made up of 876266 and 876267. It crosses to Sierra 18-8357 and Mallory 9-77900, and it fits the 19 Volvo Penta single prop and Duoprop models in the table below.
The upper gearcase seal kit is the set of seals that holds the gear oil in and the water out at the top of the drive. It is the kit to buy when the drive is coming apart for a bearing, a U-joint or a reseal, because the seals are the cheapest part of that job and the only part that is single use.
The usual sign is milky gear oil. Water gets past the seals, the oil turns the colour of coffee, and the gears and bearings run on an oil and water mix that does not lubricate. By the time the oil is visibly milky the damage is already starting.
The other sign is oil on the outside. The drive leaves a film of gear oil on the housing or on the ground under the leg, and the level drops over a season without any obvious leak.
The number on the box is the complete kit number. 875741 is the kit, and 876266 and 876267 are the two part numbers that make it up, so a drive that lists any of the three is covered.
