Exhaust Flap Non Return Valve 872438 852644 for Volvo Penta DP-A DP-C DP-D DP-E Sterndrive AD31 AD41 KAD42 TAMD31 — Germany Local Warehouse
Product Overview
Exhaust flap non-return valve, a rubber part for Volvo Penta DP sterndrives, supplied as 1 flap weighing 99 g in a 15.3 x 10.3 x 3.3 cm (6.0 x 4.1 x 1.3 in) pack. It replaces Volvo Penta 872438, also quoted as 852644 and RM872438, and the earlier drive variants carried 872301 and 872767 on the 31 series with 872306 and 872769 on the 41 and 42 series, all of which the 872438 flap supersedes. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.
The flap sits in the exhaust outlet on the lower gear unit and closes when the engine stops. It is the only thing between the water outside the boat and an open exhaust valve, so a flap that has hardened, split or torn off is a path into the cylinder head rather than a cosmetic detail.
On the Baltic and the North Sea the load on this part is a following sea and a hard stop at a berth. Either one can push water up the exhaust, and the engine that takes it usually keeps running long enough to bend something before anyone notices.

Water Up the Exhaust
| What You See | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Flap missing from the outlet | Water has a clear path to the valve | Fit a new flap before running the engine |
| Flap hard and curled | Rubber aged, it no longer seals | Renew it, do not try to soften it |
| Flap split at the hinge | About to tear off completely | Renew immediately |
| Engine turns over but will not fire after a hard stop | Possible water in a cylinder | Stop cranking, pull the injectors or plugs and check |
| Oil milky after a following sea | Water has been reaching the engine | Investigate the exhaust path, then change the oil |
| White exhaust smoke that will not clear | Water in the combustion path | Check the flap and the exhaust elbow |
Lay-Up and Rubber Age
| Stage | What Happens to the Flap | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Season end, boat ashore | Rubber dries and takes a set in the open position | Inspect before the next launch |
| Frost in an unheated shed | Hard rubber cracks at the hinge | Check it in spring, not on the water |
| First start of the season | A stiff flap stays open and lets water in | Renew if it does not lie flat |
| Salt water berth all season | Salt crystals build on the hinge line | Rinse the drive leg after each trip |
| Long spells at low speed in a marina | Exhaust pulses work the flap constantly | Inspect at every service |
| Drive leg removed for service | Flap is easy to reach and easy to forget | Renew it while the leg is off |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Look at the outlet on the drive before ordering, a missing flap leaves the housing empty |
| 2 | Check the drive model against the table, DP-A, DP-C, DP-D and DP-E all use this flap |
| 3 | Clean the housing where the flap seats, corrosion scale will tear a new flap |
| 4 | Fit the flap with the lip facing out, a reversed flap will not seat |
| 5 | Check the flap closes under its own weight and lies flat against the housing |
| 6 | Run the engine on muffs and confirm the flap opens with exhaust flow |
| 7 | Renew the flap if the engine has ever taken water up the exhaust |
| 8 | Check it again after the first trip of the season, that is when a bad seat shows |
