Product Overview
Exhaust water shutter, a direct replacement part for MerCruiser 3.0 litre to 7.4 litre petrol sterndrives and the VM diesel range, built from 1982 to 2002. It replaces MerCruiser 807166A3 and the 14348 family, and crosses to Sierra 18-2732, GLM 89170 and Mallory 9-42802. The shutter comes in a 90 mm x 100 mm x 150 mm box, weighs 144 g with packaging, and ships with its grommets.
This is the rubber flap that sits in the exhaust outlet on Mercury MerCruiser sterndrives. Exhaust pressure pushes it open when the engine runs, and it drops shut when the engine stops so water cannot run back up the exhaust into the cylinders.
A missing or hardened shutter is the usual cause of a motor that will not turn over after a following sea, or one that hydrolocks after sitting on a mooring. It is a cheap part that fails quietly.
The fitment covers the older 4 BBL carburettor motors of the eighties, the 4.3LX and 5.0LX of the early nineties, and the VM diesel range. Check the engine model and year against the table before ordering.
