Product Overview

Flexible impeller with 12 blades for Volvo Penta TAMD and MD120 series diesel engines, Jabsco 17935 pumps, Johnson 09-819B pumps and Detroit Diesel, Caterpillar and Cummins marine pumps, a cooling system part 95 mm (3.74 in) in diameter and 63 mm (2.48 in) wide on a 25 mm (0.98 in) shaft. It replaces 17935-0001, 09-819B and 18-3275. Shipped from our Australia local warehouse.

Twelve blades move noticeably more water than the eight blade version, which is why this impeller is used where the pump lifts from a low intake or feeds a large heat exchanger. On a diesel working hard in warm water that margin is what keeps the engine off the high temperature alarm.

The 25 mm spline hub is the giveaway that this is the large body. Fit it dry and it will burn, fit it without the spline fully engaged and the hub will strip, so seat it on the shaft before the cover goes down and fold the blades in the direction of rotation.

Twelve Blades and the 25 mm Hub

What You Find What It Means What To Do
Spline teeth worn to points Hub slipping on the shaft Check the shaft splines before fitting
Hub spins inside the rubber Bond failed from a dry run New impeller, this cannot be repaired
Eight blade version in the housing Smaller pump body This impeller will not fit, check the body
Hub sits proud of the housing Impeller not seated on the spline Strip and refit, folding the blades
Blades splayed and curled Heat damage from running dry Renew, and prime before the next start
Insert cracked at the keyway Forced onto a rusty shaft Clean the shaft, never hammer the hub on

Diesel Cooling in Australian Heat

How the Boat Is Used Effect on the Pump What To Do
Warm northern water above 28 °C No cooling margin, pump works flat out Renew on hours, not on symptoms
Long runs at cruise to the shelf Blades wear fast at sustained rpm Inspect every 200 hours
Salt water, engine flushed rarely Salt dries in the pump and scales the cam Flush after every trip
Sandy shallows and ramps Grit scores the cam and the plate Check both at every service
Boat ashore over the wet season Blades take a set in the housing Renew before the season
Genset run continuously at anchor High hours at low load Change on generator hours as well

Dry Running and Heat Damage

What You See Cause What To Check
Blades cracked at the root Ran dry on the ramp or after a strainer block Impeller, plus the strainer and seacock
Blackened blade tips Friction heat from no water Impeller and the cover face
Rubber crumbs in the strainer Impeller breaking up Find every blade before reassembly
Exhaust note hard and dry Little water leaving the pump Impeller, keyway and the inlet hose
Temperature climbs under load only Pump cannot keep up Cam, plate and housing bore
Overheat after a service Air lock or a dry start Prime the pump before loading the engine

Fitting Notes

Step Action
1 Check the number on the old impeller, 17935-0001, 09-819B and 18-3275 are the same body
2 Check the shaft size, this is the 25 mm spline hub for the large pump body
3 Check the pump housing and cam for deep scoring before fitting a new impeller
4 Check the spline on the shaft for wear, a rounded spline will not hold the hub
5 Lubricate with glycerine or soap only, never grease or oil on neoprene
6 Seat the hub fully on the spline, then fold the blades in the running direction
7 Fit the cover and gasket dry and tighten evenly
8 Prime the pump and confirm flow before loading the engine
