Product Overview
Gearcase seal kit for the Johnson and Evinrude lower unit, the full set of oil seals, O-rings, gaskets and drain plug washers needed to reseal a gearcase that is leaking oil or taking in water. It replaces Johnson Evinrude 5006373, 5000411 and 439141, it crosses to Sierra 18-2623 and 18-8384, and it ships as one kit in a 150 mm x 100 mm x 80 mm box at 288 g.
Water in the gear oil is the failure that matters on these engines. Once the propshaft or driveshaft seal lets salt water past, the oil turns milky, the bearings start to fail, and a repair that began as a seal kit becomes a gearcase rebuild. A leaking seal is worth catching at the first sign of milky oil on a drain plug.
The kit covers every seal in the lower unit: driveshaft and propshaft seals, the bearing carrier seals, the shift shaft seal, the water pump and gearcase paper gaskets, the drain and vent plug washers, and the O-rings that seal the housing joints. That is why it is a full reseal rather than one seal at a time.
Doing the whole set at once is the sensible approach on an engine this age. Opening the gearcase twice means two lots of gaskets, two lots of gear oil and twice the risk of damaging a sealing face, and the seals that came out are usually the same age as the one that failed.
