Gimbal bearing and oil seal kit for Mercruiser Alpha and Bravo sterndrives, also fitting Volvo Penta SX and OMC Cobra transom assemblies, replacing Mercruiser 30-879194A02 and 30-60794A4, Volvo Penta 3853807 and OMC 0983937. The kit contains one gimbal bearing and one gimbal bearing oil seal, and it fits the 120 HP to 330 HP Mercruiser sterndrive engines as well as the Volvo and OMC drives listed below.
The gimbal bearing carries the drive shaft where it passes through the transom, and the seal sits in front of it to keep water out of the bellows. Both wear together: a growl or rumble in the steering when the drive turns is the bearing, and gear oil or water in the bellows is the seal. Changing one without the other means going back in within a season.
The bearing in this kit is the common 30-879194A02 casting, which crosses to Sierra 18-21001 and to Volvo Penta 3853807, so the same kit covers the Mercruiser Alpha One from 1986 to 1998, the Bravo range from 1988 to 1998 and the Volvo SX and OMC Cobra drives from the 1990s. The oil seal is 26-88416.

Before You Buy
- Check the drive model and serial number against the tables above, the Alpha One and Gen II use the same kit but the earlier MC-1 drive does not
- Check the bellows at the same time, a split bellows is what puts water on a new bearing
- Check the gimbal ring and swivel shaft for play while the drive is off, slop there reads like a bad bearing
- Fit the seal square in the housing and grease the lip before the drive goes back on
- Use the alignment tool on the engine coupler before refitting the drive
- Check the gear lube after the first run, milkiness means the seal or the bellows is still leaking
