Product Overview
Head gasket kit for the Volvo Penta MD5 marine diesel, the decarbonising gasket set that covers a top end strip and rebuild on the MD5A, MD5B and MD5C. It replaces Orbitrade 21561, Crom Marine 121050 and the Volvo Penta numbers 876341 and 875561, and it ships as one complete set in a 220 mm x 300 mm x 10 mm pack at 332 g.
The MD5 is one of the small single cylinder Volvo diesels that is still working in fishing boats and sailboats, and it is usually opened up for one of two reasons: a leaking head gasket that shows as water in the oil or bubbles in the coolant, or a decarbonising job after years of light load running and a smoky exhaust.
Either way the gaskets are single use. A head gasket that has been compressed once will not seal again, and the same applies to the manifold and intake gaskets that come off with it. Reusing them is how a simple head job turns into a second strip down.
The set is supplied complete, as shown in the photos, so the parts that come off are the parts that go back on. Check the head and block faces for corrosion while the head is off, because the MD5 head is a light casting and a pitted face will not hold a new gasket.
Fitment is the Volvo Penta MD5A, MD5B and MD5C. Check the engine plate against the model before ordering, and check the part numbers on the old gasket packaging where it is still readable.
