Product Overview

Pencil ignition coil set for MerCruiser, Mercury, Volvo Penta and OMC marine engines, the small round coil that supplies the spark on conventional ignition 4, V6 and V8 engines. It replaces MerCruiser 898253T24, Volvo Penta 835998, OMC 915735, Crusader 37068 and the Sierra 18-5433, 18-5435 and 18-5437 numbers, and it ships as one set in a 180 mm x 120 mm x 100 mm box at 810 g.

The pencil coil is the compact canister coil used on the older conventional ignition systems, and it is a wear item in the same way points and condensers are. Heat, vibration and years of running at low voltage all take their toll on the winding, and the coil is often the last part changed when an ignition fault is chased.

A failing coil does not always stop the engine. More often it breaks down when hot, so the engine starts from cold and then cuts out after twenty minutes, then restarts once it has cooled. A weak coil also shows as a yellow rather than blue spark, and on a V8 as a misfire that gets worse as the revs rise.

The coils are supplied as a set, as shown in the photos, so a complete ignition refresh can be done in one go rather than one coil at a time. Check the resistance across the primary and secondary windings before fitting, and check the earths on the engine block, because a poor earth will make a good coil behave like a bad one.

Fitment covers the MerCruiser sterndrive engines from 1975 to 1995 including the 120 through 898 models and the 2.5 L, 3.0 L, 3.7 L and 5.7 L, the Mercury inboard and outboard models from the Mark75 to the 1100, the Volvo Penta AQ and BB models from 1973 to 1989 and the OMC sterndrive models from 1991 to 1993.
