Magnetic drain plug with its O-ring for the Volvo Penta AQ sterndrives and the 2001 to 2003 marine diesels, supplied as 1 x plug with 1 x sealing ring. It replaces Volvo Penta 852904, it fits the AQ 270, 270T, 275, 280, AQ290A and 290 DP and SP drives plus the 2001, 2002 and 2003 engine family, and one plug ships at 25 g with packaging.
The magnet is the point of this plug. It sits in the oil or the drive and collects the fine steel that a gear set or a bearing sheds before that steel starts circulating, which is why the magnetic plug is the cheapest early warning you get on a sterndrive.
When you pull it, the paste on the magnet tells you something. A light grey fuzz is normal wear. Bright metal flakes, or a fuzz that has grown since the last change, is the drive telling you something is breaking down before it fails.
The O-ring is what seals it. They harden with heat and take a set, and a reused O-ring is the usual reason a drive weeps at the drain plug after a service, so this one comes with the plug rather than on its own.
The model list below covers ten engine models and six drive models. If your AQ drive or 2001 to 2003 engine has a magnetic plug in it now, this is the replacement.
