Product Overview
Exhaust flap for Volvo Penta 290, SP and DP sterndrives, replacing 852644. It is a replacement part that fits the exhaust outlet on the drive and stops water running back up the exhaust when the engine stops or the boat is following sea. It is supplied as 1 x exhaust flap.
The flap hangs on the outlet and is pushed open by the exhaust gas. When the engine stops it swings shut, which is what keeps the water out of the exhaust manifold and off the exhaust valves. Once the rubber perishes or the pin seizes, water sits in the manifold and the next start is a hydraulic lock, not a hard start.
Every year these are found seized solid on a drive that has been in salt water, or missing altogether after a wave broke them off. If the flap is gone you cannot see it from the outside, so check with a torch at the outlet before you assume the manifold is the problem.

Before You Buy
- Check the flap is missing or seized, a flap that is not there looks the same as a flap that is open
- Match the drive against the models table, this is the outlet used on 290, SP and DP drives
- Check the pin and the mounting holes on the outlet, a corroded outlet will not hold a new flap
- Fit it before the boat goes back in the water, a missing flap floods the manifold on the first following sea
- Check the exhaust manifold for water after a missing flap, salt water sitting in it starts corrosion inside
- If the engine has locked on the starter after a wave, stop and pull the plugs before turning it over again
