These are the plugs that let the block and the centre-rise exhaust manifolds drain. In a German winter that is the difference between a boat that goes back in the water in April and one that needs a new block, because water left in a cast iron jacket expands when it freezes and there is nowhere for it to go.
The plugs themselves are small, cheap, and usually discovered to be past their best at the worst moment: at the end of the season, on the day the boat has to be out of the water. A pack of five costs less than one seized plug drilled out, and it means the manifold plugs, the block plugs and a spare all come from the same bag.
The thread runs into cast iron or aluminium. Hand tight plus a nip is the whole specification, and it is worth remembering when the plug is being refitted in the cold with cold hands.

What Frost Does to a Block
| What Was Left In | What Happens at Frost | What It Costs |
|---|---|---|
| Water in the block jacket | Ice expands and splits the casting | New block, the season is over |
| Water in the manifold | Manifold cracks along the jacket | New manifold and gaskets |
| Water in the raw water pump | Housing and impeller damaged | Pump kit and impeller |
| Old O-ring reused on the plug | Weep starts, water stays in | Nothing, until the first frost |
| Plug refitted without a seal | Slow drip, unnoticed over winter | A cracked jacket in spring |
| Everything drained and plugs left out | Nothing | Refit the plugs with new O-rings in spring |
Draining Order for Lay-Up
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Run the engine to temperature on muffs, then stop it |
| 2 | Open the manifold plugs first, then the block plugs |
| 3 | Probe each hole with a wire, rust flakes block the drain |
| 4 | Leave the plugs out and the boat bow up so the water runs back |
| 5 | Crank briefly with the ignition disabled to clear the pump |
| 6 | Refit the plugs with new O-rings before the boat goes away |
| 7 | If the boat stays in a heated hall, still drain the manifolds |
| 8 | Check for weeps at every plug when the engine is first run in spring |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check whether the engine drains at the block, the manifold or both |
| 2 | Clean the thread before fitting, grit cuts a new O-ring |
| 3 | Fit a new plug with its new O-ring, never reuse the old seal |
| 4 | Tighten by hand plus a nip, this is a soft housing |
| 5 | Use a six-point socket, a worn hex rounds off in cold weather |
| 6 | Refill with the correct glycol mix for the local climate |
| 7 | Run up to temperature and check for weeps hot and cold |
| 8 | Keep one plug and O-ring as a spare on the boat |
