Prop Shaft Seal Set 0334950 2PCS for Johnson Evinrude V4 V6 Sierra 18-8367 1-1/4 In
Product Overview
Prop shaft oil seal set for Johnson and Evinrude outboard lower units, two lip seals that replace Johnson Evinrude 0334950 and 0777538, Sierra 18-8367 and GLM 86810. The seal fits a 1.250 in shaft in a 1.687 in bore, the set ships as two seals, and it fits O, L2 and M2 type gearcases from 1991 to 2012.
The prop shaft seal is the last seal between the gear oil and the water. It sits in the bearing carrier behind the propeller, and the lip runs on the polished surface of the shaft. Every time the propeller turns, the lip works against that surface, so this is the seal that wears first on a lower unit that stays in the water.
When it goes, water gets into the gear oil instead of oil getting out. The first sign is usually milky oil at the drain plug, then a whine from the gearcase that gets louder as the bearings lose their oil film. Catching it at the emulsified oil stage is a seal job, and catching it at the whine stage is a gearset.
Two seals are needed for the application, which is why they are sold as a pair. A single seal replaced on its own leaves the outer position empty and the inner seal takes the whole load, so the job is done once with both.
Fitment covers the O, L2 and M2 type gearcases across the 100 HP to 200 HP four and six cylinder engines listed below, including the 60 degree V6 carb models and the E-TEC 115, 130, 150, 175 and 200. It does not fit the SLX or S2 type gearcases used on the AJ, AK, AH and AG models, so check the gearcase type before ordering. The 800 series V6 lower units with a 1-1/4 in prop shaft from 1991 to 1993 are also covered, listed by the source catalogue as the 150 HP, 175 HP, 200 HP and 225 HP models.

|---|---|---|
| Milky oil at the drain plug | Water past the prop shaft seal | Fit the new seal set |
| Gear oil leaking behind the propeller | Seal lip worn or hardened | Fit the new seal set |
| Whine from the gearcase under load | Bearings running without oil film | Fit the new seal set and inspect the gears |
| Oil on the propeller hub | Seal leaking onto the shaft | Fit the new seal set |
| Water in the oil after every trip | Seal lip no longer holding on the shaft | Fit the new seal set and check the shaft surface |
| Fish line behind the propeller | Line wound into the seal and cut the lip | Fit the new seal set and remove the line |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check the gearcase type and shaft diameter against the table before ordering |
| 2 | Drain the gear oil and look at it, milky oil confirms water ingress |
| 3 | Take the propeller and the carrier off |
| 4 | Prise the old seals out without scoring the bore |
| 5 | Clean the bore and look at the shaft where the lip runs, a worn groove will eat a new seal |
| 6 | Fit both seals with the lips facing in and drive them in square |
| 7 | Grease the lips and refit the carrier and the propeller |
| 8 | Refill the gear oil and check again after the first run |
