Product Overview
Skeg guard kit for the Mercury MerCruiser Alpha One Generation II sterndrive from 1991 to present, replacing Megaware SkegGuard 27031 and crossing to Panther 35-SS610. It is a stainless steel shield that slides over the existing skeg and is supplied as 1 x skeg guard with the mounting hardware.
The guard is 18 gauge marine grade 316 stainless with a mirror polish and a 3 mm lower wear tab, so it takes the ramp and beach contact instead of the aluminium skeg. On an Alpha One Gen II the skeg is the casting that gets ground down first, and once enough of it is gone the drive steers badly and the prop starts finding the ramp.
It also repairs a broken skeg rather than only protecting a good one. It can be fitted with as little as 2 to 3 inches of the original skeg left, which is the case where a welder would want the drive stripped completely. The drain hole in the bottom stops water sitting inside the guard and freezing.

Before You Buy
- Confirm the drive is Alpha One Generation II, the Generation I skeg has a different profile
- Check at least 2 to 3 inches of the original skeg is left, a shorter skeg needs welding first
- Look for cracks where the skeg meets the gearcase, a cracked skeg will not hold a guard
- Check the gearcase is not corroded through under the skeg, a guard will not repair that
- Raise the drive on the trailer before starting, the guard seats better with the drive vertical
- Check the screws after the first trip and again after a month, they settle onto the casting
