Product Overview

Skeg guard protector for Mercury and Mariner outboards from 75 HP to 300 HP, the stainless part that bolts over the lower unit skeg to take the wear a gearcase gets on ramps, beaches and shallow water. It replaces Megaware SkegGuard 27211 and Panther 35-SS660, it is made from 18 gauge marine grade 316 stainless steel with a 3 mm lower wear tab, and one guard ships in a 370 mm x 165 mm x 30 mm pack at 640 g.

The skeg is the fin under the gearcase, and it is the first thing to hit when a motor is tilted down too far on a ramp or run through shallow water. It is also what protects the prop and the gearcase housing behind it, so a skeg worn down to a stub leaves the expensive parts exposed.

This guard slips over what is left of the skeg and is held with bolts drilled through it. Megaware rates it as usable with only 2 to 3 inches of original skeg left, which is the point where most skegs are written off and a new gearcase housing is the only other option.

The material is 18 gauge marine grade 316 stainless steel, mirror polished, with a 3 mm wear tab along the bottom edge where a skeg takes the most abrasion. There is a drain hole at the bottom of the guard so water cannot sit inside it and corrode the leg or split the guard if it freezes.

Fitment covers the Mercury and Mariner 75 to 300 HP range listed below, including Command Thrust, SeaPro, the 4.8 in torpedo four strokes and Verado, and the 200 to 250 HP Optimax and ProXS two strokes. The 4.8 in torpedo gearcase is the one to check, and Torquemaster gearcases are not covered.

Why Fit A Skeg Guard

Situation What The Guard Does
Skeg worn down by ramp drag Restores the depth and shape of the skeg
Skeg broken off above the prop Bolts onto the remaining 2 to 3 inches and rebuilds it
Shallow water and beach launching Takes the abrasion instead of the gearcase
Hidden debris in the water Stainless plate absorbs the impact before the housing does
Prop and gearcase protection Keeps the lower unit housing behind the skeg covered
Resale or insurance inspection Hands the motor on with an intact lower unit
