Starter Solenoid Relay 89-817109A1 for Mercury Force Outboard 40-250 HP SW109
Starter Solenoid Relay 89-817109A1 for Mercury Force Outboard 40-250 HP SW109
Product Overview
Starter solenoid relay for Mercury and Force outboards from 40 HP to 250 HP, replacing Mercury 89-817109A1, 89-817109A2 and 89-817109A3, and crossing to Sierra 18-5834, Arco SW109, GLM 72500 and Mallory 9-15117. One solenoid relay is supplied.
The solenoid is the switch between the battery cable and the starter motor, triggered by the key. When it fails the motor clicks and does not crank, or cranks weakly and the solenoid body gets hot within seconds. A screwdriver across the two main terminals that cranks the motor confirms the solenoid rather than the starter.
Fitment is by serial number, not by horsepower alone, because Mercury changed the starter terminal size partway through production. The 100 and 115 HP four cylinder motors built with 5/16-18 starter terminals use this relay up to serial OD283221, and the later motors from OD283222 use the same part.

Before You Buy
- Check the serial number against the ranges above, and check the starter terminal size on 100 and 115 HP four cylinder motors
- Check the battery and the main cables first, a low battery or a corroded cable looks exactly like a failed solenoid
- Check the small trigger wire at the solenoid for 12 V with the key turned, no voltage means the harness or the neutral switch
- Disconnect the battery before changing the relay, the main cable is live at all times
- Clean the terminal faces and fit the nuts tight, a loose main terminal arcs and welds itself
- Turn the motor over on muffs and check the relay does not stay engaged or get hot after starting
- 30-Day Easy Returns
