VRO Fuel Pump Replacement 5004558 for Johnson Evinrude 150-250 HP V6 Outboard
VRO Fuel Pump Replacement 5004558 for Johnson Evinrude 150-250 HP V6 Outboard
Product Overview
VRO fuel pump replacement for the Johnson and Evinrude V6 outboards, supplied as an aftermarket pump that goes in place of the original VRO unit. This is the part that feeds the engine once the oil injection side of the original VRO pump has failed. It replaces Johnson and Evinrude 5004558, 435953 and 174566, it fits the 90 degree V6 Looper and Crossflow engines from 150 to 250 HP, and it installs on the stainless bracket the original pump used.
This pump does not mix oil. The original VRO pump drew oil from a tank and blended it into the fuel, and the oil side is the part that fails. This replacement drops that system and runs on premix only.
That means the fuel tank has to be mixed 50:1 before the engine is run on this pump. One pint of two stroke oil to six gallons of fuel. Running the engine on straight fuel after fitting this pump will seize it.
The pump installs on the bracket already on the engine, with the nipples facing down. That is the whole fit: take the old VRO pump off, put this one on the same bracket, connect the lines, and mix the tank.
Going to a plain mechanical pump is the long term fix for a VRO engine. The oil injection systems on these engines are the failure point, and a manual pump removes that system rather than rebuilding it.

The 150 to 250 HP V6 engines are the main application and are the ones given on every listing for this pump. The 120, 130 and 140 HP V4 Loopers and the 300 HP V6 and V8 are given on some of the listings for this pump as well, so if your engine is one of those, send us the model and the serial number and we will confirm the pump against it before you order.
The pump is listed by horsepower rather than by model year because the same bracket and the same pump fit across the whole run of these V6 engines. The horsepower list is given on the listings as 150-155-175-185-200-225-235-250 HP, which is the full range of the 90 degree V6 from the smallest to the largest.
Fuel Mixing
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Oiling system | None, the pump does not mix oil |
| Ratio | 50:1 |
| Per 6 gallons of fuel | 1 pint of two stroke oil |
| Before first start | Mix the tank before the engine is run |
| If the engine is run unmixed | It will seize |
This is the one thing to get right on this pump. The original VRO pump had an oil tank and a pump that blended the oil in, and the oil side is what fails. This pump has no oil side at all, so the oil has to go into the fuel before it reaches the engine.
What's Included
| Component | Detail | Qty |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel pump unit | 438559A | 1 |
| Fuel pump unit | 438556A | 1 |
| Mounting bracket | Recorded on our parts file as part of the assembly | 1 |

| Fuel hose | 8 mm inside, 14 mm outside, 24 cm long | 1 |
| Clamps, screws, nuts and ties | Supplied with the assembly, individual part numbers not published | Included |
Our parts file records this as an assembly of two pump units, a bracket, three fuel hoses and the clamps and fixings. The listings for this pump describe it as the pump shown in the photographs and state that the bracket in the photograph is not supplied and that the original VRO bracket is reused. Those two descriptions do not match, and the bracket is the part that matters here.
If the bracket is what you are unsure about, message us with the engine model and serial number before ordering and we will confirm what ships with the pump and whether your existing bracket is used.
