Product Overview
Water pump impeller kit for Mercury Mariner 75 HP to 225 HP outboards and Mercruiser Alpha and MC1 sterndrives, supplied as 1 x housing, 1 x impeller, 1 x wear plate, 1 x water tube guide, 2 x drain screw gaskets and 6 x O-rings, replacing 46-96148A8, 46-96148Q8, 46-96148A5 and 46-96148T8.
One kit covers both sides of the Mercury range because the pump body is shared. The same housing, impeller and wear plate sit on the V6 outboards from 75 HP up and on the Alpha and MC1 sterndrives, so the number you will find on your old housing is usually 46-96148 in one of its suffixes.
The kit is complete down to the O-rings and the drain screw gaskets, which matters on a sterndrive where the pump sits behind the gear housing and a reused seal will let water into the oil. Do the whole set in one go while the lower unit is off.

- Check the drive ratio on the sterndrive, all the Alpha and MC1 ratios listed use this pump
- Check the serial range on the outboard, the list above is the guide for the 75 to 225 HP V6
- Check the gear housing for scoring and the water tube for a swollen grommet seat
- Fit the impeller with the blades folded in the direction of rotation and a smear of glycerine only
- Replace the drain screw gaskets and pressure test the gear housing before refilling
- Check the gear oil after the first run, milky oil means a seal was missed
