Product Overview
Water pump impeller kit for Mercury and Mariner 25 HP and 30 HP and for Tohatsu and Nissan 25 HP, 30 HP, 35 HP and 40 HP outboards, supplied as 1 impeller, 1 cup, 1 stainless plate, 1 drive key, 2 gaskets and 4 screws, net weight 145 g. It replaces Mercury 853792T01, 853792A1 and 853792A07 and Tohatsu and Nissan 361-87322-0, 361-87322-0M, 361873220 and 361873220M. Shipped from our Australia local warehouse.
Tohatsu builds the 25 to 40 HP blocks that Mercury and Mariner sell under their own name, so one kit carries both part number families. The Mercury 853792 group and the Tohatsu 361-87322 group are the same pump.
The kit includes the cup and the plate, not only the rubber star. Once the cup is scored or the plate is grooved, a new impeller running on old hardware cannot hold pressure, which is why the whole set goes in at once.

Reading the Old Pump
| What You Find | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Blades curved in one direction and hard | Taken a set while parked | Fit the full kit |
| Blade tips worn flat | Running against a dry or scored cup | New cup comes in the kit, use it |
| Cup scored in rings | Sand or grit has passed through | Fit the new plate and cup together |
| Plate grooved under the blades | Clearance opened, flow dropped | New plate is in the kit |
| Key slot rounded on the shaft | Impeller has been slipping | Check the shaft before fitting |
| Gaskets torn or stuck to the housing | Old gaskets reused last time | Both gaskets are in the kit |
Salt, Sand and Warm Water
| Australian Use | Effect on the Pump | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Estuary and shallow bank work | Sand scores the cup first, then the blades | Flush and check after any grounding |
| Warm northern water all year | Neoprene softens, blades take a set | Shorten the interval |
| Long spells between trips | Blades stick to the cup and tear on start | Turn the motor over by hand before starting |
| Salt left in the housing | Corrosion on the plate and screws | Flush on muffs after every salt trip |
| Trailer boat, ramp launches | Mud and weed drawn up the inlet | Clean the inlet screen each trip |
| Fresh water dams | Slower wear, but silt still gets in | Check the telltale every trip |
Service Interval
| Use | Replace The Kit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend estuary boating | Every 12 months | Rubber ages whether used or not |
| Weekly use in the north | Every 6 months | Warm water shortens blade life |
| Hire or commercial work | Every 100 hours | Keep a spare kit aboard |
| After sand or mud ingestion | Immediately | Grit scores the cup and the plate |
| After an overheat alarm | Immediately | Check the cup and drive key as well |
| Motor parked for months | Before the next trip out | Blades set against the cup while parked |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check the model and serial on the transom bracket, the 25 to 40 HP block uses this pump |
| 2 | Check which number family the old part carries, 853792 for Mercury Mariner and 361-87322 for Tohatsu Nissan |
| 3 | Note the blade direction before the old impeller comes out |
| 4 | Check the housing for scoring and the plate for grooves, both come in the kit so replace them together |
| 5 | Check the drive key slot in the shaft, a worn slot will spin a new impeller |
| 6 | Fit the impeller with a smear of glycerine or soap, never grease or oil |
| 7 | Turn the shaft by hand while pushing the housing down so the blades fold the right way |
| 8 | Run on muffs, watch the telltale, then recheck the screws after the first trip |
