Product Overview
Water pump impeller with key for the Johnson and Evinrude 20, 25, 28, 30 and 35 HP outboards, the six blade rubber impeller and the drive key that turns it. It replaces Johnson Evinrude 395289 and 395265, it also crosses to Sierra 18-3051, Mallory 9-45200 and GLM 89750, it measures 50.52 mm outside with a 16.05 mm shaft bore, and it ships as one impeller and one key in a 150 mm x 180 mm x 30 mm pack at 48 g.
The impeller sits in the water pump above the lower unit and the key locks it to the drive shaft. Without the key the impeller can spin on the shaft, and a spinning impeller pumps nothing even though the blades look perfect.
The hub is brass, which is what holds the key slot true over the life of the impeller. The blades are rubber, six of them, 50.52 mm across and 18.59 mm high. That is the size that identifies this pump, so measure the old impeller if there is any doubt.
A tired impeller shows as a weak tell tale at idle that picks up once the motor revs, then an engine that runs hot at low speed where the pump does most of its work. Left until the blades let go, the pieces travel up the tube and block the thermostat or the water jacket.
