The TC profile has a single lip with a dust lip behind it, which is what you want on a shaft that sees water on one side and oil on the other. The spring keeps the lip loaded as the rubber ages.
Seals are cheap and gearcases are not. A weeping seal lets water into the oil, the oil turns to emulsion, and the bearings go soon after. Change the seal whenever the shaft is out rather than waiting for the leak.
