Product Overview
Temperature sender, the temperature sensor for the dash gauge, for Mercury Marine Mercruiser, OMC and Crusader V6 and V8 inboard and sterndrive engines, replacing 171960, 97258 and 97258A1 and crossing to Sierra 18-5898 and Crusader 700427. One sender with a 1/2 inch NPT thread and a 10-32 stud terminal.
The thread is 1/2 inch 14 NPT, the terminal is a 10-32 stud and the sender reads to 240 degrees F. Those three details matter more than the part number on the box: the same looking sender is also sold with 3/8 NPT and with a spade terminal, and neither will seat or read correctly here.
It fits the Mercruiser MCM and MIE engines, the OMC inboard and OMC stern drive V6 and V8 motors and the Crusader V6 and V8. It is the sender that feeds the dash gauge, not the one that feeds the engine alarm or the EFI computer, so a wrong reading here shows on the gauge only.

Before You Buy
- Check the thread in the block or manifold, 1/2 inch NPT is not the same as the 3/8 NPT sender used on some small blocks
- Check the terminal on your harness, this sender uses a 10-32 stud and a ring or nut terminal rather than a push on spade
- Check the gauge first by earthing the sender wire with the key on, a gauge that swings to full is fine and the sender is the fault
- Use a thread sealant rated for coolant and do not overtighten into an aluminium manifold
- Refill and run up to temperature, then check the reading against a heat gun at the thermostat housing
- Check for coolant weeping at the thread after the first heat cycle
