Product Overview
Thermostat for Johnson and Evinrude outboards, opening at 62 °C (143 °F) so the block comes up to temperature quickly and then holds it. It replaces 0329766, 0394409, 0434137 and 0765580, and crosses to Sierra 18-3500 and GLM 13170. One thermostat, package contents as shown in the photographs. Dispatched from our Australia local warehouse.
The thermostat is the part that decides how warm the block runs, and on a loopcharged V4 or V8 it does more work than on a small motor. A stuck-open thermostat is the quiet failure: the motor starts, idles and runs, but it never gets out of cold start enrichment, so it fouls plugs, drinks fuel and makes water in the crankcase over a damp winter. A stuck-closed one shows up the other way, as a fast overheat within minutes of launch.
Both failures look like fuel or ignition problems from the helm. If the motor has been running cold for a season, or the overheat horn has sounded once and cleared, pull the thermostat housing and test the old unit in a pan of water before ordering anything else.

Signs the Thermostat Has Failed
| Symptom | What It Points To |
|---|---|
| Motor never reaches normal temperature | Thermostat stuck open, running cold |
| Plugs soot up and fuel use climbs | Cold start enrichment never shuts off |
| Milky oil or water in the crankcase | Cold running, condensation not burned off |
| Overheat alarm within minutes of launch | Thermostat stuck closed |
| Tell tale strong but block still hot | Thermostat closed, water bypassing |
| Temperature gauge swings up and down | Thermostat sticking part way open |
Installation Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Disconnect the battery and let the motor cool completely |
| 2 | Drain the block, the thermostat sits above the water line on most models |
| 3 | Remove the housing cover and note the gasket and seal arrangement |
| 4 | Test the old thermostat in a pan of water, it should open near 62 °C |
| 5 | Clean both mating faces, no gasket scraper marks in the aluminium |
| 6 | Fit the new thermostat with the spring towards the hot side |
| 7 | Fit a new gasket or O ring, do not reuse the old one |
| 8 | Refill, run on muffs and watch the temperature come up to normal |
