Product Overview
Bell housing gasket kit for MerCruiser R, MR, Alpha One and Alpha One Gen II sterndrives from serial 6225577 onward, 1983 and newer, supplied as 1 outdrive mounting gasket, 1 bell housing gasket and 4 O-rings in a 18 x 28 x 3 cm (7.1 x 11.0 x 1.2 in) box. It replaces 27-94996Q2, 94996Q2, 94996A2, 94996A20, 64818A3, 949962 and 94996, plus Sierra 18-2743, GLM 31141 and Mallory 9-61012. Held in our Australia local warehouse.
The drive has to come off for bellows, gimbal bearing or alignment work, and these gaskets and O-rings are single use. Reusing a compressed gasket lets salt water into the bell housing, which is the short road to a seized gimbal bearing and a corroded driveshaft yoke.
Two of the O-rings seal the water passage and two seal the drive oil passage. Mixing them up, or leaving one out, is the usual reason a fresh service leaks on the first run.

While the Drive Is Off
| Part | Why It Goes Together | If Skipped |
|---|---|---|
| Bell housing gasket kit | Seals the housing once the drive is off | Salt water into the bellows cavity |
| Drive bellows | Same labour, perishes on the same schedule | Water and gear oil in the bellows |
| Gimbal bearing | Accessible only with the drive removed | Rumble and vibration through the hull |
| Water passage O-rings | Two per kit, compressed after one fit | Overheat from a leaking pickup |
| Drive oil O-rings | Two per kit, keep oil in and water out | Milky drive oil within a season |
| Alignment check | Free once the drive is off | Splines wear, coupler fails early |
| Anodes | Behind and around the drive | Faster corrosion on the housing |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Confirm the drive serial, this kit is 6225577 and above, earlier drives take a different set |
| 2 | Clean both mating faces to bare metal, old gasket and salt crust both stop the new gasket sealing |
| 3 | Check the bell housing face for corrosion pitting, deep pits need dressing before assembly |
| 4 | Fit all four O-rings dry and in their grooves, no sealant on rubber |
| 5 | Align the gimbal bearing before the drive goes back on, do not pull the drive up with the nuts |
| 6 | Tighten the drive nuts evenly in a cross pattern to the book torque, uneven torque distorts the housing |
| 7 | Pressure test or run on muffs and look for water at the housing joint before the boat goes back in |
| 8 | Check the drive oil level after the first run, milky oil means an O-ring rolled out of its groove |
