2 Pcs Exhaust Y-Pipe Rubber Seal Kit 41802 8M0068607 GLM 86217 for MerCruiser Alpha One Gen 2 Bravo 1 2 3 Blackhawk Transom — Germany Local Warehouse
Product Overview
Rubber seal kit for the exhaust Y-pipe on MerCruiser sterndrives, supplied as 2 seals weighing 28 g with packaging. It replaces MerCruiser 41802, Mercury Marine 8M0068607, GLM 86217, SEI Marine 9F-116-07 and OBR Red Rhino MR-949. It fits Alpha One Generation 2, Bravo 1, Bravo 2, Bravo 3 and Blackhawk transom assemblies, which carry the 4.3 L V6, 5.0 L and 5.7 L V8 engines. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.
One seal sits on each side of the Y-pipe, in the groove between the pipe and the transom plate. They close the exhaust and cooling water passage, so they work in constant heat, wet exhaust gas and salt, and they are the reason a tired pair shows up as a smell before it shows up as a leak.
These rings are cheap and the job behind them is not. The Y-pipe comes off when the engine or the transom assembly comes apart, so the moment to fit new ones is while it is already in pieces.

Why These Seals Fail
| What You Find | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Seal flattened and shiny on one face | Taken a permanent set from heat | Renew both, they age together |
| Seal hard and brittle, cracks in the groove | Rubber has dried out | Renew before the Y-pipe goes back on |
| Seal swollen and soft | Fuel or oil has reached the rubber | Find the leak, then renew |
| Only one side leaking | Still renew both, the other is the same age | Two seals per kit for this reason |
| Exhaust smell in the engine bay at idle | Seal not closing the passage | Stop running it until renewed |
| Water weeping down the inside of the transom | Seal has failed on the water side | Renew and check the Y-pipe faces |
Exhaust Smell and Carbon Monoxide
| Symptom | Where It Comes From | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel or exhaust smell in the cabin | Seal leaking at the transom joint | Carbon monoxide has no smell of its own |
| Smell strongest at idle or trolling | Low exhaust pressure, leak not blown clear | The slowest running is the most dangerous |
| Smell after a long run, not before | Heat softens an old seal | A seal can hold cold and leak hot |
| Headache or drowsiness on board | Exhaust gas entering the cabin | Stop the engine and get air |
| Alarm going off with no fault code | Gas reaching the sensor | Check the transom joint before the engine |
| Seal looks fine but the smell started this season | Rubber has aged through, not torn | Renew, appearance is not a test |
Lay-Up and Spring Start
| Situation | What Happens | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Ashore over winter in an unheated shed | Rubber hardens further in the cold | Renew if the Y-pipe is off anyway |
| Baltic and North Sea boats | Salt in the joint stays wet between trips | Flush the raw water side before lay up |
| Y-pipe removed for an engine job | Old seals are never reused | Fit the new pair before assembly |
| First start in spring | A dried seal seals late or not at all | Check the joint after the engine reaches temperature |
| Transom assembly disturbed | Seal can roll out of its groove on reassembly | Confirm it sits proud all the way round |
| Boat kept afloat year round | Constant damp, no chance to dry | Inspect at every service |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Confirm the drive is Alpha One Generation 2, Bravo or Blackhawk, the Generation 1 joint is different |
| 2 | Check the old seal against 41802 or GLM 86217 before ordering, the cross reference above lists the rest |
| 3 | Clean both grooves back to bare metal, old rubber left behind will not seal |
| 4 | Check the Y-pipe and transom faces are flat, a corroded face will not seal a new ring |
| 5 | Fit both seals dry, no grease, in clean grooves |
| 6 | Check each seal sits proud of its groove all the way round before the Y-pipe goes on |
| 7 | Bring the faces together square, a seal rolled out of the groove leaks straight into the bilge |
| 8 | Run the engine and check the engine bay for exhaust smell before the boat goes back in the water |
