Product Overview
Zinc anode kit, a sacrificial corrosion part for Volvo Penta sterndrives and engines, supplied as 5 x anode with both the male and the female hollow ends. It replaces Volvo Penta 3838499, 800476, 804107, 838929 and 858501, and crosses to Sierra 18-6001, GLM 12789, Tecnoseal 00714 and CMP CM838929Z.
These sit in the cooling passages and on the drive housing of a raw water cooled engine, and they are the metal that corrodes instead of the aluminium around them. Five in a pack matters because a set of drive anodes is rarely one piece: the transom shield, the drive housing and the engine block each take one, and they waste at different rates.
Zinc is the right alloy for salt water. A zinc anode in fresh water develops a crust and stops working, which is why lake boats need the magnesium equivalent. Check the anodes at the start of every season and replace any that is half gone, a spent anode looks original but protects nothing.

Before You Buy
- Check the drive model plate against the list above before ordering, the 290 and DP drives take a different anode set from the 280
- Use zinc in salt or brackish water and magnesium in fresh water, the wrong alloy stops protecting the drive
- Clean the mounting face on the drive before fitting, an anode that is not in bare metal contact does nothing
- Do not paint over the anode, paint insulates it from the water and it will stop working
- Inspect at the start of each season and replace anything more than half consumed
