Ignition Coil 697-85570-00-00 for Yamaha 2 Stroke 50HP-90HP Outboard 1992-2006 — Australia Local Warehouse
Product Overview
Ignition coil for Yamaha two-stroke outboards running 50HP-90HP, one coil per cylinder, built for the 1992 to 2006 model years. It replaces Yamaha 697-85570-00-00 and 6H2-85570-00-00, both of which resolve to the same coil body. Dispatched from our Australia local warehouse.
One coil fires one cylinder on these three-cylinder loop charged motors. When a coil breaks down under heat the cylinder drops out above half throttle, the idle goes rough, and the motor refuses to pull past about 4000 rpm with a load on. At the ramp it starts and idles, which is why the fault so often gets blamed on fuel.
The same coil was fitted across the B, C, E and P series from 1992 through 2006, so a single number covers a long list of models. That also means the fault is easy to prove before spending money: swap the coil with a known good one and watch whether the dead cylinder follows it.

One Cylinder Down Offshore
| What You Notice | What It Usually Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Idles fine, will not pull past 4000 rpm | A coil breaking down under load | Swap in this coil and retest under load |
| Rough idle that clears as revs rise | One cylinder firing intermittently | Check the cap and lead before the coil |
| Motor dies after 20 minutes and restarts cold | Coil failing once it reaches temperature | Test the coil hot, not cold |
| Same cylinder dead after swapping coils | Not the coil, look at the charge coil | Check the stator and the wiring |
| Green corrosion on the coil terminal | Salt spray tracked down the lead | Fit a new coil and grease the terminal |
| Black burn mark on the coil tower | Loose cap arcing and burning the tower | New coil, new cap, seat it fully |
Testing Before You Replace
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Run the motor until it is warm, most of these only fail hot |
| 2 | Pull each plug lead in turn and note which cylinder changes nothing |
| 3 | Swap the suspect coil with a known good one on the same block |
| 4 | If the dead cylinder moves with the coil, the coil is the fault |
| 5 | If it stays put, check the spark plug, cap and lead resistance |
| 6 | Look for burn marks on the tower and corrosion on the terminal |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Read the model code and year on the transom bracket, suffix letters decide the coil |
| 2 | Disconnect the battery before touching the ignition system |
| 3 | Note the lead routing, the coil is mounted to the block and takes the heat |
| 4 | Clean the mounting face so the coil sits flat and grounds properly |
| 5 | Fit the new coil and tighten the bolts evenly, do not overtighten the plastic body |
| 6 | Grease the terminal with dielectric grease and seat the cap fully |
| 7 | Renew the plug on that cylinder and gap it to spec |
| 8 | Run on muffs, then take the boat out and load the motor past half throttle |

Before You Buy
- Read the model and year on the transom bracket, the suffix letters identify the exact coil
- Test the old coil hot, most of these fail only once the engine is at temperature
- Check the spark plug cap and lead resistance as well, a corroded cap mimics a failed coil
- Use dielectric grease on the terminal and seat the cap fully, a loose cap arcs and burns the coil
- Replace the plug on the affected cylinder at the same time and gap it to spec
- This is one ignition coil, the plug, cap and lead are not included
- 30-Day Easy Returns
- Ships from our Australia local warehouse
