CDI Ignition Coil Unit 32900-98101 32900-98100 for Suzuki DT5 DT6 DT8 5 6 8 HP 2 Stroke
CDI Ignition Coil Unit 32900-98101 32900-98100 for Suzuki DT5 DT6 DT8 5 6 8 HP 2 Stroke
Product Overview
CDI ignition coil unit for Suzuki DT5, DT6 and DT8 two stroke outboards from 5 HP to 8 HP, the sealed capacitor discharge module that charges the coil and fires the plug. It replaces Suzuki 32900-98100 and 32900-98101, and it is one unit in a 16.5 x 13 x 6 cm box.
It fits the DT5 S and L from 1980 to 1985, the DT6 S and L from 1984 to 1985, and the DT8 S and L from 1980 to 1986 and again in 1988. Those are the small two strokes that Suzuki built for tenders and small fishing boats, and the CDI box on them is the part that fails when the motor has been left out in the weather.
The failure is usually invisible from the outside: the motor loses spark on one cylinder, or dies as soon as it warms up, then restarts when it cools. Before ordering, check the kill switch, the plug cap and the stator resistance, because a bad ground or a shorted stop circuit looks exactly like a dead CDI.

Dead CDI or Something Else
| What You See | What It Means | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| No spark on either cylinder | CDI or stator failed | Test the stator before ordering |
| Spark when cold, none when hot | CDI breaking down with heat | Renew the CDI unit |
| Runs then dies after a minute | CDI or a coil failing hot | Check the coil resistance first |
| Spark at one plug only | Coil or cap, not usually the CDI | Swap the plug and cap first |
| No spark after washing the motor | Water in the CDI connector | Dry and check the plug before buying |
| Kill switch suspected | Stop circuit shorted to ground | Disconnect the kill wire and retest |
Two Stroke Ignition Checks
| Check | How | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Kill circuit | Disconnect the stop wire and crank | Rules out the switch in a minute |
| Stator resistance | Meter across the charge coil | Compare with the manual figure |
| Trigger coil | Meter and crank for a pulse | A dead trigger looks like a dead CDI |
| Plug caps | Measure or swap | The cheapest test on the list |
| Grounds | Clean and tighten the CDI earth | A bad earth misfires hot |
| Fuel | Confirm the plugs are wet | A no start is not always spark |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check the number on the old unit, 32900-98101 and 32900-98100 interchange |
| 2 | Battery off and the kill switch off before starting |
| 3 | Photograph the connector and the wire colours before pulling them |
| 4 | Clean and check the earth point on the block |
| 5 | Fit the new unit on its mounts, do not overtighten the rubber mounts |
| 6 | Connect the plugs fully, a half seated plug misfires |
| 7 | Check for spark on both cylinders before refitting the cowl |
| 8 | Run on muffs and check the motor restarts when hot |
