Product Overview
Exhaust hose, a cooling system part for Volvo Penta V6 and V8 sterndrive engines rated from 175 HP to 311 HP, supplied as 1 hose weighing 431 g in a 20 x 16 x 10 cm (7.9 x 6.3 x 3.9 in) pack. It replaces Volvo Penta 24069348 and 834751 and crosses to Sierra 18-2766. The hose carries raw water and exhaust gas from the riser down through the transom shield, covering AQ175, AQ200, AQ205, AQ211, AQ225, AQ231, AQ260, AQ270, AQ271, AQ290, AQ311 and the 307 HP V8 between 1977 and 1993. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.
This is the hose that lives with heat, salt water and vibration at the same time. The inside carries exhaust gas at several hundred degrees, the outside sits in bilge water, and the wall is flexing every time the boat comes on and off plane.
A hose that has gone soft is worse than one that has split. A soft wall collapses under suction at speed, starves the engine of cooling water, and the first sign is usually a temperature gauge that climbs only when the boat is pushed hard. Left alone it can also let water back through the exhaust port into the bilge.

When the Hose Has Gone Soft
| What You Find | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Wall soft and spongy when squeezed | Rubber broken down by heat and salt | Renew before the season |
| Bulge appears at planing speed | Inner ply separated, hose is collapsing | Renew, do not keep running it |
| Soot and water seeping past the clamp | Clamp lost tension or the wall has shrunk | New hose and new clamps |
| Temperature climbs only at high throttle | Hose sucked flat, water flow restricted | Renew the hose and check the inlet |
| Bilge water rises when the engine stops | Water siphoning back through the exhaust | Check the hose and the flapper |
| Hose hard and cracked outside | UV and age, common on boats stored outside | Renew, cracking spreads through the wall |
Lay-Up, Heat Cycling and Salt
| Stage | What Happens to the Hose | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Season end, boat ashore | Salt water sits inside the hose for months | Flush the engine, drain the hose |
| Frost in an unheated shed | Trapped water freezes and stresses the wall | Drain completely before storage |
| First run of the season | A hardened hose splits when it heats up | Inspect and squeeze the hose in spring |
| Salt water use on the Baltic or North Sea | Salt crystals form on the inside as it dries | Flush after every trip |
| Long periods at planing speed | Heat and pressure cycle the wall | Check at every service, renew at the first sign |
| Engine mounts worn | Hose flexes beyond its design range | Fix the mounts, a new hose will fail again |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Match the engine model plate against the table, several V6 and V8 hoses look alike |
| 2 | Measure the bore and the length of the old hose before ordering |
| 3 | Fit new stainless clamps, old ones crush a new hose and cause leaks |
| 4 | Check the riser outlet and the flapper while the hose is off |
| 5 | Slide the hose fully onto both spigots, a half seated hose restricts flow |
| 6 | Tighten the clamps evenly on both ends, do not overtighten the soft wall |
| 7 | Run on muffs and check for seepage at both ends under load |
| 8 | Recheck the clamps after the first trip, rubber settles as it heats |
