Product Overview
Exhaust mixing elbow, a cast part for Volvo Penta marine diesels, supplied as 1 elbow in a 21 x 16 x 12 cm (8.3 x 6.3 x 4.7 in) box. It is the Volvo Penta 861289 casting, also sold as 851289 and 860656, with Orbitrade 16289, Crom 116026 and HGE1289 as the aftermarket equivalents. The elbow bolts to the exhaust manifold and is where raw cooling water is injected into exhaust gas that leaves the turbo at several hundred degrees, so it works wet, hot and in salt at the same time. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.
It fits the 3.6 L six cylinder families: AD31, AD41, KAD32, KAD42, KAMD42, TAMD42, KAD43, KAD44 and KAD300.
The failure that matters is not the one you can see. The water jacket corrodes from the inside out, and the outside of the casting usually still looks sound when the wall has already gone thin. A white salt trail or a rust weep at the joint is the last warning before water starts running back into the manifold.

Reading the Old Elbow
| What You Find | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| White salt trail on the outside | Jacket is weeping through a thin wall | Renew before it perforates fully |
| Rust weep at the manifold joint | Water is escaping at the face | Renew the elbow and the gasket |
| Coolant or raw water in the bilge after a run | Wall has gone through | Stop running the engine |
| Engine hydrolocked after a hard stop | Water has reached a cylinder | Renew the elbow, then check the cylinders before turning it over |
| Black soot at the injection point | Gas escaping before the water joins | Renew, the casting is cracked |
| Elbow looks fine but is 12 years old | Corrosion is internal and invisible | Change it on age, not on appearance |
Lay-Up, Salt and the Season
| Situation | What Happens to the Elbow | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Boat ashore over winter | Salt water sits in the jacket and attacks the wall | Flush with fresh water before lay up |
| Baltic and North Sea use | Constant salt load, high hours of corrosion | Inspect the outside for salt trails each season |
| Long periods at idle in a marina | Wet exhaust, cooler gas, more condensation | Check the joint at every service |
| Engine run hard and stopped hot | Thermal shock across a thin wall | Let it idle before shutdown |
| The elbow has been on since the boat was built | It is past its service life even if it looks sound | Plan replacement before it fails |
| Winter temperatures below freezing | Trapped water freezes and splits the jacket | Drain the raw water side completely |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check the engine model against the table, the 31 to 300 series share this casting |
| 2 | Compare the outlet angle and the bolt pattern with the old elbow, there are several shapes in this family |
| 3 | Renew the manifold gasket and the exhaust hose clamps at the same time |
| 4 | Check the manifold face for pitting, a rough face will not seal a new elbow |
| 5 | Support the elbow while tightening, the casting is heavy and the studs are in aluminium |
| 6 | Tighten in a cross pattern to the book torque, uneven load cracks the flange |
| 7 | Run on muffs and check the joint for water and the outlet for a steady flow |
| 8 | Recheck the joint after the first sea trial, heat cycling settles a new casting |
