A carburettor that sat through a winter with fuel in the bowl rarely comes back clean. Petrol evaporates, the light ends go first, and what is left sets into a varnish that closes the pilot jet. Owners usually notice in April, when the motor starts on choke and refuses to idle.
German forecourt petrol now carries up to 10 percent ethanol, which absorbs water from the air over a damp winter. That is why the same motor stored in a dry garage for four months can need a carburettor, while one run dry in autumn does not.

Winter Storage and the Bowl
| How It Was Stored | What You Find in Spring | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Run dry before lay up | Starts within a few pulls | Keep the carburettor, spend nothing |
| Fuel left in the bowl for six months | Will not idle, needs choke | New assembly is the quick route |
| E10 fuel left in the bowl | White or green deposit in the jet | New assembly plus new fuel |
| Tank not drained | Sediment drawn through the needle | Clean the tank, fit a filter |
| Stored outdoors under a cover | Damp in the bowl, corroded pin | New assembly, check the fuel cap seal |
| Carburettor already rebuilt twice | Worn throttle shaft, air leaks | Assembly, not another rebuild |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check the serial prefix on the bracket, BZBF, BZBK, BZBL and BZBJ all use this carburettor from 2002 to 2006 |
| 2 | Drain and rinse the tank before fitting, settled sediment will pass straight into the new bowl |
| 3 | Renew the inline filter, and the fuel hose if it has gone hard over the winter |
| 4 | Check the fuel cap seal and the tank vent, a damp tank feeds water into the carburettor |
| 5 | Set the idle mixture screw one and a half turns out before the first start |
| 6 | Prime and inspect the drain screw and the bowl joint for weeping |
| 7 | Adjust idle speed with the motor in gear at the boat, not on a garden stand |
| 8 | At the end of the season, close the fuel tap and let the motor run until it stops on its own |
