Product Overview
Exhaust elbow manifold gaskets for MerCruiser 4.3, 5.0, 5.7, 350 and 454 GM V6 and V8 inboard and sterndrive engines, covering 262 CID, 305 CID, 350 CID, 377 CID, 454 CID and 502 CID from 1981 to 1998, plus 1996 to 1997 MAG, supplied as 2 composite fibre gaskets 2 mm thick. They replace Mercury MerCruiser 27-863724Q, 27-863724, 27-41813 and 27-860233, and cross to Sierra 18-0897, GLM 30240, Quicksilver 18-0897, Barr MC47-27-41813 and Osco 8503-GR. Held in our Australia local warehouse.
The pair covers both faces of a centre rise outlet manifold: the joint to the manifold and the joint to the elbow. Both carry raw water, so when one lets go the engine draws salt water straight into a cylinder on the exhaust stroke.
That is why the symptoms are odd. The motor may run perfectly and then refuse to turn over after a week on the mooring, or it may hydraulic on the starter. A gasket this cheap is the difference between a service and a rebuild.

Water in a Cylinder
| What the Owner Finds | What It Usually Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Engine will not turn over after a week on the mooring | Water drained into a cylinder past the joint | Pull the plugs, crank it clear, renew the gaskets |
| Rust stain running down the block | Joint leaking sea water slowly | Renew the gaskets and the bolts |
| White salt crust around the elbow bolts | Weeping at the elbow face | New gaskets, clean both faces |
| Starter spins, motor locks | Hydraulic lock from water in the bore | Stop cranking, investigate at once |
| Motor runs hot only under load | Water passage partly blocked, not the gasket | Check the manifold and elbow passages |
| Exhaust smell in the engine bay | Blown gasket at the manifold face | Renew and check the faces with a straight edge |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Identify the manifold as centre rise outlet, these gaskets do not suit the earlier rear riser type |
| 2 | Read the engine serial on the flame arrestor decal to confirm MAG or LX before ordering |
| 3 | Scrape both faces to clean metal and check them with a straight edge, a warped manifold will not seal |
| 4 | Check the manifold and elbow for cracks with the parts off, a cracked elbow looks exactly like a leaking gasket |
| 5 | Renew the elbow bolts if the heads are corroded, they are usually why the joint failed in the first place |
| 6 | Fit the gaskets dry and torque the bolts in a cross pattern to the book figure |
| 7 | Run on muffs and watch both faces for weeping before the boat goes back in the water |
| 8 | After the first trip, recheck the bolt torque, exhaust joints settle once they heat cycle |
