Product Overview
Crankshaft position sensor for MerCruiser and Volvo Penta petrol engines, replacing MerCruiser 864297T01 and Volvo Penta 3858979, and crossing to Sierra 18-7556 and 18-7706. It is supplied as 1 x sensor, a direct fit in the original bore.
The sensor reads the reluctor on the crankshaft and tells the ECM where the engine is in its rotation. When it fails there is no spark and no injector pulse, so the engine either will not start or dies once warm, and a scan tool will usually show the fault as a crank or cam correlation code rather than as a sensor fault.
It fits the MPI and SCi petrol engines from 4.3L through 8.2L, including the 350 MAG, 377 MAG, 383 stroker and the 600, 662 and 700 SCi. Check the number on the old sensor before ordering, because the early carburetted engines and the later MPI engines use different pickups on the same block.

Before You Buy
- Read the number off the old sensor, the carburetted and MPI engines use different pickups
- Check the reluctor ring through the sensor bore for rust or a missing tooth, a damaged ring will kill a new sensor
- Clean the bore before fitting so the sensor seats at the correct air gap
- Check the connector and the loom back to the ECM for corrosion, a bad earth mimics a failed sensor
- Clear the stored codes after fitting and confirm the engine starts from cold and from hot
- If the engine still cuts out when warm, check the ignition relay before replacing the sensor again
