Fuel Pump 397839 for Johnson Evinrude 6 8 9.9 15 HP 2 Stroke Pre-1993 Outboard with Gasket 18-7350 — Australia Local Warehouse
Product Overview
Fuel pump assembly for Johnson and Evinrude 6 HP to 15 HP pre-1993 two-stroke outboards, supplied as 1 pump and 1 mounting gasket. It has a metal body measuring 60 mm x 40 mm x 35 mm (2.36 x 1.57 x 1.38 in), weighs 130 g, and sits on the powerhead side of the 2-cylinder cross-flow engines. It replaces Johnson Evinrude 397839, 397274, 395091 and 391638, plus EMP 1399-07350, Sierra 18-7350 and Mallory 9-35350. Held in our Australia local warehouse.
The pump is driven by crankcase pulses, so a worn diaphragm shows up as a fuel delivery fault rather than a mechanical noise. The primer bulb will not stay hard, fuel weeps at the body seam, and the motor leans out at idle with a sneeze that clears the moment the throttle opens.
These motors are often the second or third engine on a property, run on and off through the year with fuel sitting in them between trips. Ethanol blend left standing is the common cause of a diaphragm that has gone stiff before its hours justify it.

How a Diaphragm Fails
| What You Notice | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Primer bulb will not stay hard | Diaphragm leaking back, no fuel held | Renew the pump |
| Fuel weeping at the body seam | Diaphragm split at the edge | Stop running it, fuel is reaching the outside |
| Lean sneeze at idle, clean under throttle | Low pump volume at low pulse | Check the pump before the carburettor |
| Motor dies when revs are held | Delivery falls behind demand | Renew the pump and check the pulse hose |
| Fuel in the crankcase, rich running | Diaphragm torn, fuel past the pulse side | Stop and renew, change the gearcase oil if it smells of fuel |
| Pump fine, still no fuel | Blocked filter or collapsing hose liner | Check the line and filter first |
Fitting Notes
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Confirm the motor is 1992 or older, the 1993 and later 6 to 15 HP use a different body |
| 2 | Check the model plate, not only the horsepower |
| 3 | Clamp the fuel line and catch the spill before opening the pump |
| 4 | Note which way the pulse port faces before the old pump comes off |
| 5 | Check the pulse hose and fuel lines for cracks and soft spots |
| 6 | Fit the new gasket dry and tighten the body bolts evenly, do not overtighten |
| 7 | Prime the bulb and check for leaks before starting |
| 8 | Run the motor and check again after it is warm, a seam weep often shows only hot |
