Product Overview
Ignition coil for the Johnson and Evinrude small outboards, the two wire coil that fires the plugs on the older magneto and battery ignition engines. It replaces Johnson Evinrude 584477 and 0582995, it crosses to Sierra 18-5181, Mercury 802371A1, CDI 183-4477, GLM 72100 and Mallory 9-23102, and it ships as one coil in a 150 mm x 100 mm x 60 mm box at 280 g.
This is the universal replacement coil for a long run of small OMC engines, from the 1.5 HP and 2 HP motors of the late sixties up to the 40 HP twins of the early seventies. Because one coil covered so many models, the part number list is long and the fitment is by model code as much as by horsepower.
The coil has two wires, one at 2-7/8 inch and one at 2-5/8 inch, and two mounting holes set at 2-5/8 inch and 2 inch centres. That hole spacing is what decides whether a coil will bolt onto a given stator plate, so measure the old one before ordering if the engine has been worked on before.
Failures all look the same from the helm. The engine starts and runs until it is warm and then cuts out, or it drops a cylinder at low speed, or the plugs come out wet with fuel and no spark. A coil that has failed internally will usually still show continuity, so the test is a spark check with a known good plug rather than a resistance reading alone.
