Lighting coil for Yamaha 9.9 HP and 15 HP two stroke outboards built 1996 to 2009, replacing 63V-85570-00-00, 63V-85570-00, 63V-85570-01 and 63V-85570-02 and crossing to Sierra 18-23602. It is supplied as 1 x lighting coil for the charge and lighting circuit.
This is the coil under the flywheel that feeds the lighting and battery charging circuit, not the coil that fires the plugs. When it fails the motor still runs, which is why the fault is easy to mistake for a flat battery: the lights go dim at idle, the battery goes flat over a week, and the motor itself feels completely normal.
Test it with a multimeter on the coil leads rather than guessing at the battery. The resistance should be steady and it should not change when the coil is warm, and the usual failure is a break in the winding that only opens once the flywheel has been spinning for a while.

Before You Buy
- Check the engine is a two stroke 9.9 or 15 HP built 1996 to 2009, the earlier coils are different
- Check the old coil against 63V-85570-00 before ordering
- Measure the coil resistance cold and again warm before replacing it, a break that only opens hot is the usual fault
- Check the battery and the regulator first, a failed regulator looks the same from the battery side
- Hold the flywheel with the correct tool, the magnets crack if the flywheel is levered off
- Check the stator plate screws are tight and the wires are not rubbing on the block before the flywheel goes back
