Product Overview
Water pump impeller kit for Mercury outboards from 80 HP to 200 HP and Mercruiser sterndrives from 120 to 485, replacing 46-96148A5, 46-96148A8 and 46-96148Q8 and crossing to Sierra 18-3217 and GLM 12290. The kit is one impeller, wear plate, water tube guide, gaskets, seals, two drain screw washers and a set of O-rings.
The impeller is 47-89984, the large body part used on the V6 and inline motors of that period. The kit is sold with the wear plate and the water tube guide because those three parts wear as a set: a new impeller against a scored plate loses flow, and a worn guide lets the tube drop out of the pump on refit.
It covers the 80 to 200 HP Mercury outboards from 1976 to 2006 by serial range, and the Mercruiser 120, 140, 165, 228, 260, 470, 485 and 898 sterndrives from 1970 to 1982 plus the R, MR and Alpha One drives through 1991. Serial numbers decide fitment, so match yours to the tables below.

Before You Buy
- Check the serial number against the tables above, the 1970s and the 1990s motors do not share the same pump
- Check whether the drive is an outboard or a sterndrive, both are covered but the housing differs
- Check the driveshaft splines and key slot, a worn slot spins a new impeller
- Check the water tube for a perished grommet at both ends, that is the usual cause of a hot engine after a pump rebuild
- Fit the impeller blades bent in the direction of rotation and grease the housing bore
- Check the telltale stream at idle after the first start, and recheck the temperature on the first run
