Product Overview
Steering tube grease nut, a stainless guard part that threads onto the 7/8 in-14 output end of an outboard steering tube and lets grease be pumped into the cable without pulling the helm. It replaces 50-28251 and FSM068, and comes with 2 high pressure O-rings plus a Zerk fitting in the body.
The steering tube on a cable system is the one place where water sits against a sliding rod. The factory cap seals it until the cap is lost or the grease dries out, and then the rod rusts and the cable fills with water. Fitting this guard turns that joint into a grease point: two pumps from a gun once a season pushes fresh grease through and drives any water out of the nut.
The thread is the part that matters. 7/8 in-14 is the OMC standard and covers most outboard steering tubes, but check the output end of your tube before ordering, because a few hydraulic helms use a different fitting. It takes about 10 minutes to fit and needs one 7/8 inch wrench.

Before You Buy
- Check the output end of the steering tube for 7/8 in-14 threads, this is the only measurement that matters
- Spray marine grease on the steering rod before fitting so the guard does not gall on the thread
- Wipe the old threads clean and remove the factory dust cap first
- Thread the guard on hand tight and snug it with a 7/8 inch wrench, do not over torque it
- Pump grease through the Zerk fitting until fresh grease purges out, then refit the dust cap
