Product Overview
Exhaust water shutter for MerCruiser V6 and V8 sterndrive engines from 4.3 L to 8.2 L, replacing 807166A1. It is the flapper part that hangs in the exhaust Y-pipe, and it is supplied as 1 x water shutter with the grommets it rides in.
The shutter swings open under exhaust pressure and drops shut when the engine stops, which is what keeps water out of the exhaust manifold on a following sea or when the boat comes off plane. A perished or melted shutter turns a routine exhaust job into water in number 5 and 7 cylinders, so they are replaced whenever the riser or the Y-pipe comes apart.
They also melt rather than wear. A shutter that has been cooked has curled edges and a hard, glossy surface, which is the sign of an engine that has run hot or has had water sitting in the Y-pipe. If the old one is melted rather than torn, find out why before fitting a new one.

- Check the shutter is not melted rather than worn, a melted one means the engine has been running hot
- Match the old shutter against 807166A1 before ordering
- Check the shutter pin and the grommets in the Y-pipe, a seized pin holds the shutter open and lets water back in
- Fit the shutter the right way round, it must swing one way only and rest against the Y-pipe
- Check both sides of a twin exhaust, they fail together because they see the same heat
- After any overheat or a following sea event, pull the plugs and look for water before turning the engine over
