Product Overview

Oil seal for the Yamaha 9.9, 15 and 25 HP outboards, sold as a pack of two so both sides of the drive shaft can be done in one job. It replaces Yamaha 93101-20048-00, 93102-20484 and 93103-20048, it also crosses to Parsun Makara F15-06020003, and it ships as two seals in a 150 mm x 180 mm x 10 mm pack at 14 g.

The seal sits at the top of the lower unit where the drive shaft goes down into the gearcase. It keeps the gear oil in and the water out, and it works against the shaft every time the engine turns, so it is the first seal to wear on an outboard used in salt water.

The early sign is oil on the leg, a rainbow sheen on the water at the stern, or gear oil that turns milky at the drain plug. Once water is in the gearcase the bearings run in emulsion, and what starts as a seal becomes a gearset.

Two seals in the pack covers the usual service: the shaft seal and the one under it, replaced together because the second is already out once the first is pulled. Doing one and not the other is where repeat leaks come from.

Fitment covers the Yamaha 9.9, 15 and 25 HP models from 1984 to 1993 listed in the table below, the lower unit drive shaft position on each. Check the model code and year on the engine plate, and the number on the old seal, before ordering.

3 Split the leg and take the drive shaft out
4 Prise the old seals out without scoring the housing
5 Clean the seal bores and the shaft where the lips run
6 Fit both new seals squarely, lips facing the gear oil side
7 Refit the shaft and the leg, then refill with gear oil
8 Run the engine on flush muffs and check for leaks and level after a run
