Power steering pulley for the Volvo Penta sterndrives from 3.0 L to 8.2 L, the belt driven part that takes the drive off the crankshaft and spins the power steering pump. It replaces Volvo Penta 3853804, it fits the GL, GS, Gi and Fi models listed below across seven engine sizes, and one pulley ships at 918 g with packaging.
The power steering pump on these engines is not driven off the camshaft or the distributor. It hangs on a bracket at the front of the block and takes its drive from a belt running around this pulley, which is bolted to the crank or to the circulating pump hub depending on the year.
That makes the pulley a part with two jobs: it has to sit square on the hub so the belt runs true, and it has to hold its diameter so the pump turns at the speed it was designed for. A pulley that has worn its bore will wobble, which shows up as a belt that keeps throwing itself off and a steering pump that groans at idle.
The same pulley covers a wide spread of engines because Volvo Penta used one accessory drive layout across the small block and big block ranges. The model list below runs from the 3.0 L four cylinder up to the 8.2 L big block.
Fitment is by engine model code on the flame arrestor or the transom plate. Check that code against the table, because the model names GL, GS, Gi and Fi were reused across the range and the year alone will not identify the engine.
