Rewind Spring 312932 for Johnson Evinrude Outboard 2 4 4.5 HP 1969-1992 18-6511
Rewind Spring 312932 for Johnson Evinrude Outboard 2 4 4.5 HP 1969-1992 18-6511
Product Overview
Rewind starter spring for the Johnson and Evinrude 2 HP, 4 HP and 4.5 HP outboards, the coiled spring inside the pull start that returns the rope after every pull. It replaces Johnson Evinrude 312932 and 777489, it crosses to Sierra 18-6511, it fits the 2 HP from 1969 to 1980, the 4 HP from 1969 to 1992 and the 4.5 HP from 1980 to 1990, and one spring ships at 177 g with packaging.
This is the spring that makes the starter work rather than the rope. Every pull winds it, and it unwinds to pull the rope back onto the sheave, so a broken one leaves you with a recoil that will not retract or a rope that will not catch at all.
They fail in one of two ways. The most common is the hooked end breaking off, which happens after years of the same load at the same point. The other is the spring losing tension and the rope dragging back slowly instead of snapping home.
A broken spring is also a safety item. When the hooked end lets go the spring can unwind inside the housing, and on the small 2 and 4 HP engines the housing is close to your hand while you pull, so replace it rather than trying to bend a new hook on the old spring.
Check the horsepower against the table. The 2 HP, the 4 HP and the 4.5 HP are three different engines with three different year ranges, and the 4.5 HP only started in 1980.
