Flexible impeller kit for Volvo Penta, Jabsco, Johnson, Sherwood, Crusader, Chris Craft, Onan, Perkins, Westerbeke, Pleasurecraft and Chrysler water pumps, 62 mm diameter, 31.6 mm wide, 16 mm key drive shaft, 12 blades in neoprene, supplied with an O-ring and five gaskets, replacing 3854286, 835512 and 18838-0001.

This is the large key drive impeller that sits at the centre of most of the older American and European raw water pumps, so the same rubber body carries a dozen different part numbers depending on which engine builder bought it. The kit includes the O-ring and five gaskets because those are the parts that leak after a service, not the impeller.

The 62 mm body with a 16 mm keyed shaft is the number that matters. The smaller 57 mm and 60 mm impellers look almost identical in a photograph, and a 62 mm impeller will not seat in a smaller pump housing. Check the key, the keyway and the cam, then look at the wear plate and cover before fitting, because scored hardware will keep a new impeller from sealing.

Before You Buy

• Check the number on the old impeller, 3854286 and 18838-0001 are the same 62 mm body
• Check the diameter, this is the 62 mm body, not the 57 mm or 60 mm impeller
• Check the key and the keyway on the 16 mm shaft, a worn key will slip under load
• Check the pump cover, cam and wear plate for scoring before refitting
• Fit with glycerine or soap only, never grease or oil on neoprene
• Seat the key, fold the blades with rotation, then both gaskets and the cover
• Prime the pump and confirm flow before loading the engine
