Product Overview

Cooling pipe and oil cooler gasket kit for Volvo Penta 230 and AQ series petrol engines of 2.3 L and 2.5 L, supplied as 3 gaskets. It replaces Volvo Penta 416033, 831622 and 418412 and crosses to Sierra 18-3889 and Orbitrade 22037. The set covers the 230A and 230B, AQ131A to AQ131D, 250A, 250B and 251A, AQ151A to AQ151C and AQ171A and AQ171C. Shipped from our Germany local warehouse.

These three gaskets sit at the joint where the water pipe meets the oil cooler on the B23 and B25 four cylinder blocks. That joint runs under pressure and heat, so the gaskets harden and start to weep coolant onto the block.

The first sign is usually a sweet smell in the engine bay and a slow loss from the expansion bottle, not a puddle. Owners top the bottle up through a season and only look for the leak when the loss gets faster.

Finding the Weep

What You Notice What It Means What to Do
Sweet smell in the engine bay Coolant weeping onto a hot block Dry the joint and look for the track
Expansion bottle needs topping up Slow loss at pressure, gaskets hardened Renew the three gaskets
White or green crust at the joint Long standing leak, coolant has dried there Clean the faces, fit new gaskets
Oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil Cooler itself has failed, not just the gasket Do not run it, check the cooler core
Loss only when the engine is hot Gasket seals cold, opens at pressure Renew before it becomes a puddle
Fresh gaskets still weep Faces not cleaned or the pipe spigot is pitted Strip again, dress the faces

Lay-Up and Frost

Situation What Happens What to Do
Boat ashore over winter Old gaskets dry out and shrink Expect a weep on the first start
Unheated shed, frost Trapped water freezes at the joint Drain the cooling system properly
First start in spring A dried gasket seals late or not at all Check the joint after the engine reaches temperature
Baltic and North Sea boats Salt air corrodes the pipe spigot face Inspect the spigot while the pipe is off
Engine run hot once Gaskets take a permanent set Renew them after any overheat
Coolant never changed Corrosion particles block the seal line Flush the system with the gasket change

Fitting Notes

Step Action
1 Check the old gaskets against 416033, 831622 and 418412, this is the three piece kit
2 Confirm the engine is a B23 or B25 based unit, the later six cylinder blocks use different gaskets
3 Drain the coolant below the joint before the pipe comes off, or it will run into the bilge
4 Clean both faces back to bare metal, old gasket left behind is the usual cause of a repeat leak
5 Check the pipe spigot for corrosion pitting, a pitted face will not seal on new gaskets
6 Fit the three gaskets dry and align them on the studs before any nut goes on
7 Tighten evenly and in a cross pattern, the cooler flange distorts easily
8 Refill with the correct coolant mix, run to temperature and check the joint for weeping
